Thought this might be interesting to the Jordan's no matter what there
origins, however; of particular interest to the Irish amongst us. (The
following is from Arms illustrated on plate XVI)
      JORDAN
Though Jordan is quite a common English name very few of Irish Jordan's
are of English decent. Mac Siurtain was a surname of the Gaelic type adopted
by one of the hibernicized Norman families which acquired extensive territory
in Conacht after the invasion of 1172. It signifies descendants of Jordan,
i.e., Jordan d' Exetr and this sept for such it was in effect, in due course
became in the sixteenth century phrase "wild Irish". In the "Annals of
Connacht" in which the name appears frequently between the years 1336 and
1470 it is spelt MacShurtan. This origin was by no means forgotten, for one
of them who was killed in 1422 is described by the annalist as "the strongest
hand and the bravest heart of all the d'Exeters of his time." In English
they were usually called Mac Jordan in Mayo while in Clare, where they were
also settled, the Faints give them variously as MacShurtan, Mac
      Shurdane, Mac Shurton"etc.
      Descendants of Jordan
Most of the people named JORDAN are of French Norman Rhineland origin. Their ancestors migrated in large numbers to England and Ireland after William, Duke of Normandy, defeated Harold, KIng of England. They tended to be a ruling military,
political, merchant, tax collector, armorer, etc, caste. Many
JORDAN ancestors are associated with the rule of Henry II, Norman King of
England and Ireland. Many JORDAN ancestors are associated with the rule of
Henry I, the Norman King of England who supported the First Crusade of
Godfrey, Duke of Lorraine, to temporarily restore the rule of the Catholic
Byzantine Empire to the Middle East instead of the rule of the Turks who had cut off Europe from trade with India and Persia for teas, silks, spices, medicines, metals, tools, etc. The title "of JORDAN" was bestowed on many members of the caste for taking part in this and later Crusades and pilgrimages to the Middle East. The Norman King Henry II, the MacCarthy Clan, and Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster, defeated the Danish Vikings in
Ireland and re-opened the ports of Cork and Waterford to prosperous trade with
Europe and the Kingdom of Jerusalem, under Pope Adrian's "bulla" c. 117O, causing the Province of Munster to become French for some time. The French culture of bread and wine dominated the Irish culture of cattle, mushrooms, milk, and honey, because of smallpox infestation of the latter. The Normans ruled much of Scotland from the fortress JORDANHILL in Glasgow. Early Catholic texts (c. 4OO AD) spell the name JORDAN as IORDANN and refer to the baptism of Jesus in the River JORDAN or to the Baptistery of a Catholic Church. In ancient Syrian-Phoenician-Carthaginian languages JORDAN originates from the word SUR (SYR) (IOR) which refers to the River of the Syrians in the Middle
East (the JORDAN), the River of the Syrians in Tunisia (the MedJERDA), the
Rock of the Syrians (Ros SUR, SYR, or in Latin TYRE) a fortress city off the coast of Phoenicia, and the Island of the Syrians (SARDINIA or in English
JORDANIA). Note the English speaking part of ancient Syria is called the
Kingdom of the JORDAN. During the reign of Henry VIII, the Protestant
Reformation initially stopped the foreign contacts of the JORDANs and isolated England from nations remaining Catholic. The Turks also destroyed the Catholic Kingdom of Jerusalem and it's trade with Catholic
Europe. Many of the now out-of-favor JORDANs kept their name and converted to the Protestant religion. A few became ministers that carried on the
Baptistery traditions of the name. The Crown City of Cork remained especially interested in trade with Catholic France, Spain, Jerusalem, and India, for a while, compared to the rest of Britain. One of the reasons for England's
Protestant, Isolationist, and later Puritanical policies was a terrible plague c. 1528 that spread throughout Europe from Italy and Spain, which had just defeated Moorish Africa, started a Black African slave trade, conquered
America, and continued to feud with the Turks. The epidemic may have come from those foreign contacts. As time went on JORDANs were restored to their foreign contacts, many in Colonial America, India, and China. Under the Manchu dynasty,
JARDINE, Matheson, & Company ran the English speaking part of China as the
Crown Colony of Hong Kong from c. 1842, and still exist as a Crown Corporation in several parts of Asia. Much of the Province of Munster migrated to Quebec c. 185O during the Irish/Dutch potato blight, possibly caused by a fungus from Canadian lumber, American cotton, or native fungi that had prevented grape cultivation for many years. In modern times the Crown City of Cork became the center of the Fenian Cause, was destroyed in the c. 1919 War of
Independence, and was rebuilt, most records of the above being destroyed.
In modern times the names JORDAN, JOURDAIN, JARDINE, etc, can be found in many
English, French, and German speaking regions. GIORDANO is one Latin form.
Compiled by Emmett Michael JORDAN great-great grandson of John Henry JORDAN, who left Queenstown (Cobh) Ireland c. 185O for Quebec, then a tailor in
Cleveland, Ohio, then a farmer in Saint Martins, Wisconsin, who started a family of steam tractor and locomotive engineers.
