Notes for Nannie Betty Powell:
Ancestral File Number 22WR-NTR.
Nannie Powell Martin was converted when she was about 16 years of age. her mother had lived a godly life and taught her children to fear the Lord. Nannie says at the revival meetings at Allen's Chapel near Caney Spring, great Conviction would be upon the people. They would tremble and hold to the backs of the benches to keep from falling down so great was the convicting power of God. She was a fine musician and was the organist at Caney Spring Methodist Church for some years, where some years later she was married to W.J. Martin.
While it is hard to image that she ever gave a thought to a Powell family coat of arms, this is as good a place as any to put in a note about the Powell coat of arms. There are numerous variations to the Powell Family Coat of Arms, almost six, the oldest and most recognized version is described as follows: A white shield, displaying a black Catholic cross, from the Teutonic Knights and a third crusade, in each corner, are naturally colored cornish coughs. The top portion is blue and displays a severed boar's head with a red tongue and gold tusks. Above the helm sits the severed head of a black hunting dog. Another is described in Burke's "Encyclopedia of Heraldry" as follows: A red shield with gold scalloped border, the points on the border point inward. It has a large, rampant gold lion on the shield. In the center on top of the shield is an armour helmet. Behind the helmet and half-way down both sides of the shield are vines. The vines look rather like feathers. There are separate coats of arms for English Powells and for the Welsh Powells. In South Wales the Powell name is as common as Smith in the USA. One of the progenitors of the Powell line in South Wales is Rhys Ap Tudor, who some say was the last true king of Wales. His lineage goes of course to the English Tudors. Henry the VIII was a Tudor.
