- Jõran Kyn; parents unknown; b. between 1617 and 1620 in Saxony; d. after 1688 in Upland, Chester Co., Colony of Pennsylvania
Jõran Kyn was born between 1617 and 1620 in Saxony. His name was originally Jürgen Schneeweiss but he later used the more Swedish Kyn and Kühn. Sweden established a colony called New Sweden in the New World along the Delaware River in 1638. In a well documented voyage, Jõran left Gothenburg, Sweden on November 11, 1642 as a mercenary in the Swedish military guard assigned to the new Governor Printz. The group sailed on two ships, Fama and Swan. They spent Christmas in Antigua and arrived at Fort Christina, New Sweden on February 15, 1643.
In the years that followed Jõran became a settler in what was then called Upland. It later became Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He saw the colony pass from Swedish to Dutch control then to British. By the time William Penn reached the New World in 1682 Jõran was elderly but still living.
