John Coddington was a weaver and soldier in the Massachusettsmilitiaunder Major Simon Willard in the War against the ConfederatedIndiantribes, called "King Philip's War. " He is mentioned under dateof 20Nov 1675, as entitled to 03 00 00 for service. Also mentioned onpage360, under date of 20 December 1675, as entitled to 01 15 00forservice. He moved about 1677-1683 from Boston to Woodbridge,NewJersey at which village he was constable in 1692.
He first purchased land in Woodbridge from Jonathan Dennis andWilliamBingley in 1683 and the records show that he extended hislandholdings here in 1684 and again in 1691. His will cannot be foundbutthe wills of his sons Benjamin and John can be seen at theSecretaryof State's Office at Trenton, New Jersey. Described asYeoman andweaver. He is the ancestor of nearly all Coddingtons inNorthAmerica.
The town of Woodbridge was part of the agreement between DanielPierce,John Carteret, John Ogden, and Luke Watson, dated December 11,1666.They obtained a deed on December 3, 1667, whereupon Pierce, assurveyor, laid out the lands to the associates. The originaldeedfrom the Indians was dated October 28, 1664. The town was namedafterRev. John Woodbridge of Newbury, Massachusetts. By 1672Woodbridgecontained 30,000 acres and 120 families (Clayton, 1882).
In "The Oliver Connection" David Kendal Martin suggests that thewidowSarah Coddington, who died intestate in 1738, was the third wifeofJohn Coddington. His reasoning is that the fifteen heirs whoagreedamong themselves how to divide her estate included fourOliver's. Hetherefore supposes that Sarah's maiden name was Oliver, and that theonly possible Coddington husbands were John (b. 1653) orhis son John(b. 1689).
Some compilers have thought that this John Coddington was the sonofWilliam Coddington and Ann Brinley, but that ignores theoverwhelmingevidence documenting the lives of and connecting John ofWoodbridge toJohn of Boston, and John of Boston to Stockdale ofDorking, Co.Surrey.
